Wander With Wonder – Discovering Wow Moments Around the World or Across the Street
Discover the best San Francisco hotels for every travel style, from luxury landmarks to sustainable stays and boutique accommodations in the heart of the city.
From the Golden Gate Bridge to famed filming locations like the picturesque Painted Ladies of ‘Full House’ fame, California’s San Francisco is well worth adding to your travel bucket list. Luckily, this iconic city is brimming with accommodation options. Whether you’re looking for iconic luxury, a calming sanctuary, or something a little more unique, San Francisco is sure to provide a wealth of hotels and resorts to fit that brief.
Of course, facing so many options can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our top five San Francisco-based hotels of all time. So let’s get into it!
The Marker: Best Overall Boutique Hotel
We had to start this list with The Marker Union Square San Francisco, a boutique hotel in one of our favorite San Francisco locations, complete with striking historical architecture and an impressive roster of modern amenities. The Marker is an instant standout choice thanks to its striking design, intimate boutique vibes, and wide range of rooms and suites that can cater to up to four people, pets included!
But the well-equipped rooms and amazing decor on offer aren’t even our favorite thing here. That has to be the full suite of amenities you can access as a guest, including a state-of-the-art 24/7 fitness center, complimentary Wi-Fi, and an on-site restaurant with its own curated, locally sourced menu. There are plenty of treats waiting in your room, too, thanks to the addition of HD flat-screen televisions, eco-friendly lather bath amenities, and even a complimentary reusable water bottle for every guest.
All of this pairs with a fantastic central location that’s within easy reach of the Theater District, making The Marker an undeniably great option all around.
What we love –
Historic architecture
Wide range of pet-friendly accommodations
Modern amenities, including a 24/7 gym and wi-fi
Concierge support, including personalized experiences and local recommendations
Fairmont: Best Historic Luxury Hotel
There are plenty of historically iconic hotels across San Francisco, but we’d argue that the Fairmont in Nob Hill is the best. Famed for hosting presidents, including Truman, Kennedy, and Obama, in its presidential penthouse, Fairmont is the hotel you think of when you imagine San Francisco luxury. And, while you might not quite want to pay penthouse prices, there are 592 rooms on offer that could serve your budget a little better.
You can choose between guest rooms, suites, or legacy suites depending on your budget and the nature of your stay, while also enjoying on-site amenities that include a fitness gym and wellness spa, wine tasting room, and the famed Tonga Room tiki-tiki style restaurant.
Admittedly, a stay here isn’t for the lighthearted, with even standard guest rooms costing a fair amount. But if you want to step into some of the most iconic San Francisco-based history, then this is certainly the place to do it.
What we love –
The chance to visit a San Francisco icon
Varied dining options
Suites to suit every need
Specialist summer experiences, including hand-scooped ice creams
Hotel Nikko: Best Wellness Retreat
Sometimes, you want to find peace even when you’re staying in the heart of a bustling city, and Hotel Nikko is well worth mentioning for this reason.
This serene, Japanese-inspired retreat benefits from carefully appointed guest rooms and curated experiences designed to keep you comfortable. Everything is centered around the idea of central city calm, and amenities, such as a glass-enclosed indoor pool, three on-site dining areas, and a 10,000 sq. ft. fitness club, are all intended to tap right into your senses for an unforgettable stay that leaves you feeling more zen than you’ve been in months.
What we love –
Japanese-inspired contemporary zen design
10,000 sq. ft. fitness club complete with glass-enclosed indoor pool
Famed dining options like Anzu sushi restaurant
Elegantly designed four-star rooms and suites
Taj Campton Place: Best Hotel for Food Lovers
Taj Campton Place is another iconic San Francisco hotel situated near Union Square, boasting a long history, refined elegance, and a wide range of versatile event and meeting spaces. Guests can choose between suites and rooms, each designed with European elegance in mind.
Since a recent renovation, Taj Campton Place is especially notable for its dining options, including Campton Bar +, which features a renowned range of unique American-Indian-inspired dishes.
The wellness amenities on offer are also well worth a mention, and include a 24-hour rooftop fitness center that’s fully equipped with everything you could need to stay healthy during your stay, including yoga mats, cross-trainers, and Peloton bikes.
What we love –
Prime location
A wide range of event spaces
Fantastic infusion dining
Unique, fully-stocked rooftop fitness center

1 Hotel San Francisco: Best Sustainable Luxury Stay
If sustainability matters to you as you travel, then look no further than San Francisco’s 1 Hotel, which is a truly standout option for this reason. In addition to offering pet-friendly rooms and city skyline views, this luxury hotel in Embarcadero is the first truly mission-driven accommodation of its kind.
Guests here can enjoy many of the benefits that we’ve discussed across the other hotels on offer, including a range of luxury rooms and suites to suit their needs.
