Read on for some of the best ways to spend a luxury getaway in Sicily.

Relax in a Villa in Cefalu

Cefalu is a charming town that offers everything you need for a coastal getaway—incredible scenery, beautiful beaches, and picturesque streets. There are beautiful villas to rent in Sicily, and Cefalu further enchants with its rich history and vibrant culture and is home to some of the island’s top accommodations. It is an ideal base for your luxury getaway in Sicily. Here, you can relax in a beautiful villa and spend your days discovering the town’s incredible charms.

One of the best places to enjoy the best view of Cefalu town is to hike up La Rocca, where you can marvel at panoramic views stretching over to the sea. The magnificent viewpoint requires a bit of legwork, but the views will make it well worth it. It requires climbing more than 930 feet (284 meters) on a steep trail to take you to a craggy mountaintop once the site of a Norman castle.

Cefalu is famous for its crescent-shaped beach straddling Sicily’s northern coast. It’s why many locals and visitors flock to Cefalu during the peak summer season. Being one of Sicily’s most popular beaches, Cefalu Beach can get crowded, so better come early. Nevertheless, the beach has enough space to lay your towel and relax. You can also rent sun loungers with an umbrella for a day.

Scale Mount Etna

If you’re feeling adventurous, the best way to enjoy a luxury getaway in Sicily is to scale Mount Etna. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Etna has a height of just over 11,000 feet (3,357 meters) and is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Nestled on Sicily’s east coast and dominating the entire island, it’s the highest volcano in Europe, a bucket list for many mountaineers.

It’s possible to climb from April to September, although it will depend on the snowfall. In addition, the extent of climbing will depend on the volcanic activity. Visibility is also a factor to consider, with clouds tending to build up throughout the day.

The two popular starting points for the ascent are Piano Provenzana in the north and Rifugio Sapienza in the south. Both are home to ski resorts, making for an ideal base for your holiday to Sicily. While the southern side is busier, the northern section is quieter and wilder.

Regardless of the route, it is best to climb with a local guide with knowledge of the summit. Since the trails are not well-marked, there are many instances where individuals without a guide require rescue, especially in poor conditions.

Tour the Ruins of Taormina

Like many places in Italy, Sicily has its share of historical sites to delight history lovers. If you’re fond of discovering places with historical significance, consider a Sicily small group tour. A good idea is to take a tour of historic Taormina. The ruined Greek theatre overlooks the panoramic views of the sea and the volcano and dates back to the 3rd century B.C.

Considered one of Italy’s best preserved ancient Greco-Roman theatres, the horseshoe-shaped structure is perched on a hill looking over to the city and with the striking shadow of Mount Etna in the background. The other side of the theatre looks out to rolling green hills and the long stretches of stunning Ionian Sea coastline.

The Greeks constructed the theatre in the 3rd century as a venue for theatrical performances. But when the Romans conquered the area around the 2nd century, they renovated the theatre with marble and brick columns, transforming it into a Roman amphitheater for gladiator battles.

Island Hop the Aeolian Islands

If you want to visit several islands on your getaway to Sicily, consider an island-hopping tour of the Aeolian Islands, which include the Panarea, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli, Salina, Vulcano, and Lipari. These seven picturesque islands lie at the tip of Italy. Each boasts breathtaking scenery due to the region’s volcanic activity.

Dubbed the pearls of the Mediterranean, these islands are declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to their unique beauty and morphology. You can spend over a week exploring all seven islands and thoroughly soaking up their beauty. Your starting point is Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands, with numerous tourist amenities, including excellent accommodation options.

Traveling between the Aeolian Islands is easy since numerous ferry connections are available between them. The most common route is from either Palermo, Messina, or Milazzo ports in Sicily. A more convenient way of visiting the islands is to book a private island-hopping tour onboard a luxury yacht.

Explore the Vineyards of Marsala

Sicily has a winemaking history dating back to 3,000 years. The Mediterranean Island produces over 65 native wine varieties and is home to the iconic fortified wine called Marsala. Thus, exploring the vineyards of Marsala is a must on your luxury getaway to Sicily, especially for wine lovers.

Take part in tours focused on Marsala wine, explore stunning vineyards, and discover the unique beauty of Sicily. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the island’s winemaking tradition. The highlight will be the wine tastings at the end of your tour.

While most visitors come to Marsala for a winery tour, you should not miss the chance to visit many other places of interest. Check out the beautiful cathedral built on the same site as an old Norman church and the Baglio Anselmi Archaeological Museum. Stroll through the recently restored Baroque Old Town Centre, with pedestrian-friendly streets that are easy to walk around.
