Walking up the red-carpeted stairs and into the Anantara Naiadi Rome Hotel, I entered a world of luxury and grandeur. I couldn’t help gazing with wonder around the lobby adorned with exquisite artwork, setting the tone for the elegance that awaited. Despite its prime location overlooking Piazza della Repubblica, it was a haven of tranquility amidst the bustling city.

Welcomed with a friendly smile and a warm “Buon Giorno,” the attentive staff ensured the check-in process was smooth and effortless. My bag was whisked away and was waiting for me in my room, allowing me to settle in quickly. The expansive windows offered breathtaking views of the Piazza’s fountain and the nearby Baths of Diocletian, reminding me of Rome’s rich history.

A Luxurious Haven

Despite its prime location overlooking Piazza della Repubblica, Palazzo Naiadi maintains a peaceful ambiance within its walls. Termini train station is about a 5-minute walk, and buses, metro stops, and taxis are steps away. Guests can easily explore nearby attractions such as the National Roman Museum and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

Moreover, popular destinations like Via Veneto, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and the trendy Monti district are close enough to take in without getting tired feet.

Historic Architecture—Inside and Out

The Palazzo Naiadi was built in the late 19th century and features the characteristic neoclassical elements prominent during that period. Its shining white marble facade showcases a symmetrical design with rows of arched windows, decorative cornices, and intricate detailing. The gracefully curved portico entrance is a showstopper. The spacious halls are adorned with ornate columns, lavish chandeliers, and opulent furnishings inspired by the classical tradition. The grand atrium is a standout feature, boasting a high ceiling, a sweeping staircase, and a stunning central dome, all contributing to stately elegance.

History of the Hotel

The building was initially built in 1887 as part of twin neoclassical-style buildings constructed by Gaetano Koch. It served as a school for much of its history until it became a luxury hotel in the early 2000s. The hotel embraces a wing commissioned by Pope Clement XI as a grain store for the Vatican in 1705. Amazingly, the property sits atop the ruins of what was once the largest thermal bath complex in ancient Rome. Take the elevator to the basement and peer through the glass cutouts to get a closer look at the mosaics that once lined the floor of the Diocletian Bath complex.

Lobby Bar and Lounge

The hotel’s ground floor is home to an exquisite bar and lounge area, perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring the city. The design is sleek and modern, complemented by the ornate Murano chandelier glistening above one of the many curated embellishments that imbue the property with an unmistakable Italian charm.

Moreover, the plush velvet furniture beckons guests to sit awhile and enjoy one of the bartender’s signature cocktails or glass of wine. The walls are adorned with custom artwork showcasing the talent of local artists. Whether enjoying a beverage or simply unwinding with friends, guests are treated to a luxurious and artistic experience that sets this space apart.

Where Royalty, Icons, and Legends have Stayed

The Palazzo Naiadi has a captivating history intertwined with movie stars’ glamour and royalty’s presence. It has welcomed notable guests from the entertainment world, including Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Charlie Chaplin, and Pablo Picasso. The hotel also hosts distinguished royalty like King Umberto I of Italy. Its regal ambiance and luxurious amenities have consistently attracted noble guests, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a lavish experience in the heart of Rome. Most recently, the hotel served as a filming location for the 2021 movie House of Gucci.

Piazza della Repubblica

Often referred to as “Rome’s living room”. The Piazza was originally part of ancient Rome’s Baths of Diocletian complex. It was redesigned in the late 19th century and renamed after the unification of Italy. Additionally, the square features the Fountain of the Naiads and the grand Porta Pia. Today, it is a bustling square with cafes, shops, and hotels. Its central location serves as a meeting place and starting point for exploring the city, offering stunning views of surrounding landmarks.

Guest Rooms and Suites

The hotel’s opulent guest rooms exude a regal air befitting a king or queen. My junior suite was magnificent; the king-sized bed enveloped me in a cloud-like embrace, the lavender pillow mist on the nightstand a nice touch. The cozy sitting area with expansive windows and an antique wooden desk overlooked the bustling Piazza and fountain. In addition, the white Italian marble bathroom was stunning, with plush bath sheets and Acqua di Parma toiletries.

The 232 rooms and suites spread across two wings and four floors. On my next visit, I want to stay in one of the granary rooms in the Clementino wing, which was once part of the Papal residence, featuring the original wooden roof.

pairing started with raw red Sicilian prawns in a mandarin ceviche; the sommelier expertly selected wine to complement each course. Every dish was a delicious work of art, a sensory journey of flavors. I was almost too full to enjoy the sweet selection of homemade desserts… almost.

Things to Do in Rome

The hotel presents a curated selection of exclusive experiences. I loved the “Eat, Pray, Love” package via Vespa sidecar.  The three-hour guided tour uncovered the city’s hidden historical treasures and spectacular viewpoints. My driver navigated effortlessly through cobblestone alleyways and the leafy lanes of Trastevere.   A Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As we zipped through the bustling city, I imagined myself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure. While visiting the Pantheon, we found a charming café nearby for a cappuccino and cornetto, the typical Roman breakfast.

In contrast, while exploring on foot or an electric golf cart is an option, traversing via Vespa sidecar allows for a more immersive encounter—and it’s fun!

Additionally, the hotel curates various captivating activities, including Italian cooking classes, private guided tours of the Vatican Museums or Colosseum, and a rejuvenating “Diocletian Bath ritual” at their opulent new spa.

A Prime Location in Rome

Ideally situated in Rome’s Esquilino neighborhood, it offers a prime location to explore Rome’s iconic destinations. Within walking distance, guests can visit the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, plunging themselves into the city’s history. Likewise, the famous Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are nearby, providing magical moments and breathtaking views. Vatican City, with St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, is also easily accessible. Why not have a leisurely stroll and shopping along Via Veneto and Via del Corso, filled with charming boutiques, cafes, and restaurants? To sum up, Spring and Fall are my favorite times to visit Rome when you are guaranteed to experience the city at its finest.
