If you’re looking for luxury accommodation in Wellington’s very own wine region, then what could be better than spending the night on a vineyard. We’ve pulled together this list of the top 4 winery accommodation option in Martinborough, Wairarapa.
There is only a small selection of the Wairarapa’s 30+ wineries that let you stay on the property and the accommodation is very much of the boutique variety, with only a few rooms or cottages available for booking.
This means you’ll want to book well in advance to secure winery accommodation for your Wairarapa getaway. If for any reason you’re not in luck, check out the Wairarapa options in our Wellington Region luxury accommodation guide.
On the plus side, the small range of accommodation means you can almost guarantee a personal and one of a kind experience where you’re likely to be greeted by the owners and can expect all the little touches to have been considered. It’s a long way from a chain hotel in the city!
Want to know which wineries to visit on your stay? We have a Martinborough winery guide with an itinerary and everything.
Poppies Apartment
Poppies is the perennial favourite of the Martinborough wineries. It’s been around a while and we all love it, especially the platters and the rose.
Their latest addition is called simply The Apartment. It’s a one bedroom private apartment that faces out onto the vines and is the perfect secluded getaway for two.
The best part of staying there is you can immerse yourself in the life of the vineyard as much or as little as you want. You can wander the property, meet the staff and do a private tasting with them if you want. Or curl up on the couch and watch it all happen.
The website does say “We are wine makers not hoteliers” but form the looks of the space they sure know a thing or two about accommodation!
All the ingredients for a cooked breakfast are supplied along with, of course, a fully stocked wine fridge and the cheese to go with it.
Price per night is $400 with a minimum 2-night stay.
Find it at 35 Omarere Road Martinborough

Margrain Villas
Margrain has the largest accommodation offering of the Martinborough vineyards and we’ll be honest, it’s not as personal or boutique as some of the others but you’re much more likely to get a booking.
There are 14 villas on offer plus the four bedroom gatehouse and the luxurious Pinot Suite. All of the villas are self-contained and come in double or twin share configurations. Plus, there’s lots of space and rollaways on offer if you have a bigger group to fit.
The properties overlook the Huangarua River Valley and the Tararua Mountains for awesome views. The rooms all have a cosy homey vibe with lots of mid-century type furniture and space to chill out in, with a glass of pinot of course!
Price per night is $215 for the Villas and $320 for the Pinot Suite. Continental breakfast and a wine tasting for two is included.
Find it at the Corner of Ponatahi and Huangarua Roads, Martinborough opposite the Margrain Cellar Door

Luna Estate Cottage
The Luna Estate Martinborough winery accommodation offering is similar to Poppies but a bit more low key and definitely more friendly on the wallet.
They have just the one Winemakers Cottage, although rather than being restricted to couples, the two bedroom place can fit up to four.
The Cottage is not actually on the same property as the Luna estate Cellar Door, instead its out at Blue Rock, 10km out of town, where they grow many of their grapes. This makes it a bit more secluded if you’re looking for a more private getaway but it also means that the cottage is sometimes closed seasonally to protect the vintage.
Price per night is $195 with a minimum two night stay. A complimentary bottle of wine on arrival and a wine tasting for two is included.
Don’t miss a meal in their restaurant, they do delicious small plates in Asian fusion style.
Find it at 284 Dry River Road Martinborough

Mystree Estate Apartment
Mystree Estate is more of a homestay than a boutique hotel, but we love the personal and friendly experience plus the extra space their self-contained apartment has to offer compared to a hotel room.
You can enjoy a chilled bottle of the estate’s chardonnay while out on the deck enjoying the sunshine and mountain views in a lounger.
There are two bedrooms in the two storey apartment, both with ensuites. Because the property is a little way out of town, the hosts even offer to drive you to/from dinner in Martinborough, and you can enjoy canapes and wine (obviously) with them at the main house on arrival.
Price per night is $234, although its currently only bookable through Airbnb so you’ll also have to pay fees on top of that. Continental breakfast is included in the nightly rate.
