Forget the Beach Resort: 10 Reasons to Explore the Bahamas by Liveaboard Instead

Imagine waking up in the turquoise waters of the Bahamas, exploring a pristine coral reef in the morning, and spending the afternoon diving with sharks or drifting along dramatic underwater walls. By sunset, you’re enjoying a freshly prepared dinner aboard a comfortable catamaran, with another day of adventures waiting just beyond the horizon.

That’s life aboard the All Star Aqua Cat, a 102-foot luxury power catamaran that explores the spectacular Exuma Cays and surrounding waters of the Bahamas. With up to 26 dives per week, secluded island excursions, exceptional marine life, and surprisingly easy access from the United States, it’s one of the most rewarding ways to experience Bahamas scuba diving.

We’ve explored underwater destinations around the world, and Aqua Cat stands out for its combination of diverse diving, thoughtful hospitality, and effortless adventure. After two trips aboard, we’ve discovered that what makes this award-winning liveaboard special goes well beyond what you’ll see beneath the surface.

Here are 10 reasons to dive aboard the All Star Aqua Cat, and why it deserves a place on your scuba diving bucket list.

1. Getting to the Bahamas Is Surprisingly Easy

Some of the world’s best scuba diving destinations require an exhausting combination of international flights, tiny regional aircraft, and lengthy boat transfers. By the time you reach the dive boat, you practically need a vacation from getting to your vacation. Fortunately, reaching the Aqua Cat is considerably easier.

For travelers throughout much of the eastern United States, Charlotte Douglas International Airport provides a convenient connection to Nassau, with the international flight taking just over two hours. Other major U.S. airports also offer nonstop service to Nassau, making the Bahamas one of the most accessible international scuba diving destinations for American travelers.

The convenience continues when it’s time to return home. Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport offers U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance, meaning travelers complete U.S. immigration and customs procedures before boarding their return flight. When you land stateside, you arrive like a domestic passenger, making connecting flights considerably less stressful.

For busy professionals who want to spend their precious vacation time underwater rather than navigating complicated travel logistics, that accessibility is a significant advantage. You can leave the United States on Saturday, board your floating dive resort that evening, and wake up Sunday morning ready to explore the spectacular underwater world of the Exumas.

2. The Catamaran Design Makes for Smoother Sailing

If the thought of spending a week aboard a boat makes your stomach nervous, Aqua Cat’s design offers some welcome reassurance. Unlike traditional monohull vessels, catamarans have two widely spaced hulls that provide greater resistance to rolling, especially at anchor and in moderate conditions.

Aqua Cat is a power catamaran rather than a sailing catamaran, but the advantages of its broad, stable design are immediately apparent. The generous beam creates spacious public areas, comfortable guest accommodations, and a remarkably roomy dive deck. We particularly appreciated being able to move around without feeling as though every available surface was covered in someone else’s scuba equipment.

The cruising grounds are another advantage. The Exuma Cays are surrounded by islands and cays, providing numerous protected anchorages and opportunities to adjust the route according to the weather. Rather than following a rigid itinerary regardless of conditions, the captain can choose dive sites and overnight locations that take advantage of the prevailing winds and seas.

We’ve experienced firsthand how valuable that flexibility can be. On one of our trips, challenging weather prevented us from reaching several destinations on our wish list, but the crew still found excellent diving and comfortable places to spend the night.

Of course, no boat is immune to rough seas, and a catamaran can’t guarantee a motion-free vacation. Still, the combination of a stable vessel, sheltered anchorages, and experienced captains makes Aqua Cat an appealing option for divers who want a comfortable week on the water.

3. The Diving Progresses Naturally Throughout the Week

One of the most underrated advantages of a well-run liveaboard is how the diving experience can build throughout the trip. Rather than throwing everyone into the most challenging dive on day one, Aqua Cat’s crew can introduce divers to the underwater environment while assessing experience levels and conditions.

The early dives often begin on relatively shallow reefs where guests can check their equipment, fine-tune buoyancy, and become familiar with the crew’s procedures. Sites like Lobster / No Lobster provide beautiful scenery without demanding complicated navigation or challenging profiles.

As the week progresses, divers can experience stronger currents, more dramatic underwater terrain, and increasingly adventurous dives. Relatively gentle drift dives provide an opportunity to become comfortable moving with the current before tackling more unusual sites like the famous Washing Machine.

There’s also time to settle into the rhythm of liveaboard diving before venturing underwater after dark. The schedule can provide several daylight dives before the first night dive, allowing guests to become comfortable with their gear, the dive deck, and the crew’s procedures.

Deeper walls and dramatic swim-throughs may become part of the adventure as conditions and diver qualifications permit. The crew doesn’t simply assume that everyone has the same abilities, and divers should always select profiles appropriate for their certification, experience, and comfort levels.

What we appreciate most is that the experience can be both exciting and approachable. Whether you’re an experienced diver or someone looking to expand your underwater confidence, a thoughtfully managed progression makes the entire vacation more enjoyable.

4. The Variety of Dive Sites Is Absolutely Extraordinary

Some dive destinations are famous for one particular attraction. You go to see manta rays, explore a famous wreck, or photograph a specific marine species. The Bahamas offers something entirely different: an almost ridiculous variety of underwater experiences within a relatively compact cruising area.

Aboard Aqua Cat, you might begin your morning floating above colorful coral gardens, spend the afternoon exploring a historic shipwreck, and finish the day swimming along a dramatic wall that disappears into the deep blue.

The Austin Smith, a former Bahamian defense force vessel intentionally sunk as an artificial reef, offers a fascinating combination of marine history and underwater habitat. Meanwhile, sites like Dog Rocks and Whale Shark Wall feature dramatic limestone formations, coral-covered walls, and exhilarating swim-throughs.

One of our favorite underwater experiences anywhere, any dive was on Dog Rock Wall. You drop down to the sand at 70’ down and swim through a massive coral swim through called “The Church”, because of the way sunlight shines down from a cross shaped hole in the ceiling. After swimming through the relative intimacy of a rocky tunnel, suddenly finding yourself suspended above seemingly endless blue water creates an unforgettable sense of scale and the closest thing we’ve felt to flying underwater.

Then there are the Bahamas’ signature specialty dives.

The famous Washing Machine is a tidal-current dive where a powerful underwater hydraulic can spin divers around before carrying them into calmer water. It’s an optional thrill for appropriately experienced divers, and conditions determine whether it’s suitable on any given trip.

The Lost Blue Hole offers an entirely different experience. This enormous underwater sinkhole plunges far beyond ordinary recreational diving limits, creating a surreal environment where divers can explore its shallower perimeter while looking into the darkness below.

And that’s before mentioning the shallow reefs, sandy channels, aircraft wrecks, and countless opportunities to encounter turtles, rays, lobsters, and tropical fish.

5. The Shark Diving Is Worth the Trip by Itself

The Bahamas has earned an international reputation as one of the world’s premier shark diving destinations, and Aqua Cat provides opportunities to encounter these magnificent predators in their natural environment.

Caribbean reef sharks are particularly common around the Exumas, where protected habitats and healthy marine ecosystems support thriving populations. Seeing a shark glide past during an ordinary reef dive is exciting enough, but Aqua Cat also offers a dedicated shark-feeding experience as part of its diving program when conditions permit.

Watching multiple sharks circle through the clear Bahamian water is an experience that photographs and videos simply cannot reproduce. Their movements are fluid, purposeful, and surprisingly graceful, and observing them up close gives divers an entirely different perspective on animals that are so often misunderstood.

Aqua Cat’s shark dives have historically included a specialized feeding presentation, sometimes near the Austin Smith wreck, where divers observe the action from designated positions under the crew’s supervision.

Of course, shark feeding is a subject that deserves thoughtful consideration. Provisioning can influence animal behavior, and responsible operators must carefully manage interactions to reduce risks to both sharks and divers. Guests should follow all briefings and respect the crew’s instructions.

For us, the greatest reward isn’t simply the adrenaline of having sharks nearby. It’s the opportunity to appreciate their beauty, their role in the marine ecosystem, and the importance of protecting the habitats that allow these remarkable animals to thrive.

6. The Shore Excursions Are Almost as Good as the Diving

Here’s something that surprises first-time liveaboard guests: sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you’re not wearing scuba gear.

Aqua Cat isn’t exclusively about diving. The vessel carries a dedicated excursion boat called the Sea Dog, which opens up opportunities to explore remote islands, secluded beaches, and some of the Bahamas’ most distinctive natural attractions.

Depending on the itinerary and sea conditions, guests may have opportunities to visit the famous swimming pigs, explore beautiful stretches of empty white sand, or observe the native Bahamian rock iguanas found on selected islands. These are the same excursions offered from Nassau, but they feel different. Instead of piling into a motor boat with 30 of your new found friends and making the hour crossing from Nassau to the Exumas, you just climb aboard the Sea Dog with guests you’ve been diving with for many days. It’s a short, 10 minute motor and then you have the place to yourselves. The day visitors have already headed home.

There’s also something wonderfully indulgent about paddleboarding across a peaceful turquoise bay where the only soundtrack is the gentle splash of your paddle. The shallow waters around the Exumas offer spectacular places to explore by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, especially when the weather cooperates.

For those interested in snorkeling, the possibilities can include shallow coral gardens and extraordinary destinations such as Thunderball Grotto, a flooded limestone cavern made famous by the James Bond film Thunderball.

Not every excursion is available on every sailing, and we learned that lesson firsthand when weather prevented us from reaching the swimming pigs on an earlier trip. Rather than treating these experiences as guaranteed stops, we recommend embracing the flexibility that makes liveaboard travel so rewarding.

The shore excursions also make Aqua Cat more appealing for couples with different interests. One partner might be determined to log every possible dive, while the other prefers a combination of snorkeling, beaches, and relaxing aboard the boat.

After all, a week in the Bahamas should feel like a vacation, not an underwater endurance competition. If nothing else, we enjoyed giving our ears a rest and taking a few dives off.

7. You Can Log Up to 25 Dives or More in a Single Week

If you’ve ever planned a land-based scuba diving vacation, you already know how much time can disappear between dives. There’s the drive to the marina, equipment loading, boat departure, return trip, and the inevitable search for somewhere to eat.

Liveaboard diving eliminates much of that daily logistical shuffle. Your equipment stays assembled on the dive deck, the boat moves between destinations, and your next underwater adventure is often just a few steps from your cabin.

On a typical Aqua Cat itinerary, the schedule may include two morning dives, two afternoon dives, and a night dive. That’s up to five dives in a single day, with a weekly maximum of 26 opportunities under the operator’s published schedule.

Naturally, weather, site conditions, diver qualifications, and operational considerations determine which dives are offered. There’s also no expectation that guests participate in every dive.

For passionate scuba divers, however, the opportunity is extraordinary. Instead of spending a week traveling internationally for six or eight dives, you could return home with more than 20 new entries in your logbook.

We also appreciate how efficiently the crew manages the diving operation. Clear briefings, an organized dive deck, and helpful divemasters make it easier to enjoy repeated dives without constantly dealing with equipment and logistics.

The key is remembering that quality matters more than quantity. Fatigue, hydration, thermal comfort, surface intervals, and no-decompression limits all deserve attention during a dive-intensive week.

We love having the option to dive five times a day, but we love being able to skip one and enjoy a peaceful afternoon on deck just as much. That’s the beauty of having so many opportunities available.

8. Nitrox, Rental Gear, and Onboard Support Make Diving Easier

One of the realities of intensive liveaboard diving is that little equipment problems can become major inconveniences when you’re miles away from the nearest dive shop.

Fortunately, Aqua Cat maintains a well-equipped dive operation with rental equipment, useful accessories, and a crew experienced in handling many of the issues that arise during a week underwater.

We’ve personally benefited from that preparation on multiple trips. Ed needed a replacement dive computer battery on each of our visits, and the crew was able to help. They’ve also assisted us with mask adjustments, replacement accessories, and equipment needs that would have been frustrating to address in a remote location.

Aqua Cat offers rental scuba gear, including equipment that allows guests to travel without transporting every piece of their own setup. Dive lights and other accessories may also be available, while chemical marker lights for night diving can be purchased aboard the vessel.

Another significant advantage is Nitrox availability.

For appropriately certified divers, enriched air nitrox can provide longer no-decompression limits than ordinary air at certain recreational depths. That’s especially valuable during a week involving multiple dives every day, although actual limits depend on the gas mixture, depth, exposure history, and dive computer calculations.

Nitrox doesn’t eliminate decompression risk or make unlimited diving safe. Divers still need appropriate training, correct gas analysis, and careful attention to maximum operating depths and oxygen exposure.

We found it particularly useful during our Aqua Cat adventures, when repeated diving meant that no-decompression limits could become an important consideration later in the day.

It’s worth confirming rental availability, accessory purchases, and Nitrox pricing before departure, but knowing that the boat has the resources to support a full week of diving adds considerable peace of mind.

9. You Get Essential Luxury Without Sacrificing Adventure

When we talk about luxury adventure travel, we don’t necessarily mean marble bathrooms, white-glove service, or elaborate spa treatments. Sometimes luxury is simply having everything you need exactly when you need it.

Aqua Cat understands that distinction remarkably well.

Its eleven guest cabins include private bathrooms and showers, offering considerably more comfort and privacy than the shared facilities found on many budget liveaboards. The spacious dive deck, indoor dining salon, outdoor gathering areas, and upper sundeck give guests room to relax without feeling confined to a floating dormitory.

Then there’s the food.

Three freshly prepared meals each day are a welcome indulgence when you’re spending hours underwater. Rather than surviving on sandwiches and uninspired buffets, guests enjoy thoughtfully prepared breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, with snacks and fresh fruit available between meals.

On our previous adventures, we particularly appreciated how the kitchen staff remembered guests’ preferences and accommodated dietary needs. A memorable steak dinner tastes even better after a day spent swimming through underwater canyons and exploring deep coral walls.

The boat also offers complimentary Wi-Fi, giving guests an opportunity to stay connected with friends, family, or work when the connection is available. Of course, connectivity in remote island waters can vary, so we wouldn’t plan on conducting uninterrupted video conferences from the Exumas.

Beer, wine, and mixed drinks are also available aboard the vessel, adding a social element to the evening after diving has finished.

There’s just one important rule to remember: your first alcoholic drink should mark the end of your diving for the day. Alcohol and scuba diving do not mix, and responsible divers wait until all underwater activities are complete before enjoying an adult beverage.

For couples who appreciate active days followed by comfortable evenings, Aqua Cat strikes an appealing balance. You can spend the morning chasing underwater adventures, enjoy an afternoon exploring a deserted beach, and finish the day with a delicious meal and a spectacular Bahamian sunset.

That’s our kind of luxury!

10. Its Award-Winning Reputation Is Backed by Real Customer Experiences

There are plenty of companies that describe themselves as award-winning, but Aqua Cat has accumulated an impressive collection of honors from the people whose opinions matter most: experienced scuba divers.

All Star Liveaboards has received dozens of Scuba Diving magazine Readers Choice Awards across its fleet, including repeated recognition for Aqua Cat in categories such as overall liveaboard experience, quality of accommodations, luxury, food, staff, and safety.

In the company’s published 2026 Readers Choice results, Aqua Cat received first place for Level of Luxury, Quality of Liveaboard, and Quality of Berths in the Caribbean, along with second place for Best Overall Liveaboard. Those results are particularly meaningful because they reflect several aspects of the experience rather than a single standout feature.

Awards are impressive, but as frequent travelers, we’re more interested in how a company performs when nobody is handing out trophies.

That’s where the Aqua Cat crew really shines.

During our previous trips, the divemasters provided clear briefings, helped divers enter and exit the water, and paid attention to the small details that make underwater adventures safer and more enjoyable. The kitchen team remembered personal preferences, while the captain worked to find the best possible diving despite changing weather conditions.

Those are the experiences that turn satisfied customers into repeat guests. You might book the Aqua Cat for the sharks, walls, and wrecks, but it’s the crew’s professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality that make you want to return. Tomorrow brings a completely different adventure, and you barely have to lift a finger to make it happen.

We’ve traveled around the world in search of extraordinary adventures, and we’ve learned that the best trips aren’t necessarily the ones that take you the farthest from home.
