Creating a new fitness routine is hard, but maintaining that routine while traveling can seem downright impossible. Anytime you’re on the road or outside of your normal daily schedule, it’s easy to put your fitness on the back burner until you get home. Unfortunately, many people abandon their fitness routines completely for months afterward after falling into old, unhealthy patterns. Here are 5 tips to maintain your fitness routine while traveling to help you reach your fitness goals more quickly!
Make a Plan
As the saying goes, failing to prepare means preparing to fail. A lot of thought goes into planning a trip, so while you’re at it you may as well factor in your fitness routine! Take a few extra minutes to scout out the area and keep an eye out for local fitness classes, single-day gym passes, walking trails, or hiking spots that you can take advantage of during your trip.
Stay Active
It’s all too easy to lounge around while traveling, especially if you’re on vacation. While spending the entire day on the beach might be relaxing, it won’t help you keep up the momentum of your fitness routine. Luckily, most tourist spots and vacation destinations offer fun activities such as watersports, walking site-seeing tours, bike rentals, and even special group events such as yoga in the park. You can enjoy your vacation and time in a new place without spending the entire day lying around.
Workout Whenever and However Your Can
When in doubt, get creative! If you don’t have the time or resources for a gym, class, or activity, keep an eye out for ways to incorporate movement into your day. Take the stairs, go for walks, and find space to do some simple bodyweight exercises such as lunges or jumping jacks. You can even find free online videos of space-saving workouts you can do virtually anywhere.
Prioritize Sleep
Although sleeping might seem like the polar opposite of fitness, the truth is that it is a key component to reaching your fitness goals. Sleep is important for your health goals because it recharges your energy levels, improves mental focus, and gives your body the time and rest it needs to recover from your workouts. Not getting enough sleep will slow your progress, making it more difficult to reach your fitness goals. While you’re traveling it can be tempting to stay up and sleep in later than you would at home, so try to stick to a good sleep schedule!
Don’t Forget Nutrition
We all know how easy it is to get caught up in delicious, local cuisine or novelty food items while traveling. Although it’s okay to indulge here and there, don’t let your nutrition fall too far off track. The foods you eat are the fuel your body uses for exercise. If all you provide is alcohol, sugary drinks, and fried foods, you’ll end up feeling sluggish and will struggle to find the motivation to work out. As with sleep, good nutrition is essential for your fitness!
